Flipping The Couch: Rethinking Therapy

Flipping The Couch is a demonstration of individual therapy that took place in front of a live community audience in October of 2019. The founder of Healing Your Almond, Franchon Francees, participated in a talk therapy session authentically as herself -- not scripted or as a role-play. The original purpose was to provide a multicultural and diverse audience with insight into what therapy could look like in order to demystify the process and encourage viewers to seek mental health services or feel comfortable recommending them to others.

Flipping The Couch provides a unique approach to educating communities about the therapeutic process by discussing what an assessment may look like, how a session might look and feel, and what kind of questions a therapist may ask.

Additionally, Flipping The Couch may be used as a compelling and effective educational tool. Students can watch Ms. Francees, as a client, responding authentically to attending skills such as active listening, silence, open questions, reflection and summary. Flipping The Couch also provides an opportunity to consider and discuss multicultural issues when providing therapeutic services.
